Chris turned and crossed the hardwood floor on socked feet to stand before Darien. The smell of mint and wet dirt made Darien look at the bowl. Yep, mud. While he was still frowning at the bowl, Chris kissed his cheek then reached beside him, using a knuckle to flip on the recessed lighting that lined the ceiling along two walls. Violet-tinged shadows fled and the soft glow filled the bedroom. Giving Darien a brief smile, Chris turned and rounded their California king bed to the other window. continue reading

Brent toed off his Birkenstocks as he headed for the door and reached down to grab the hem of his T-shirt to pull it off. He fumbled with it, then managed to toss the garment into a nearby chair. Left only with his cargo shorts, he stopped in the doorway.

Hell didn’t turn, didn’t move from gazing up at the sky. “You’re late.” His tone was cool, but maybe he wasn’t too mad. A pop and a swish and a trail of sparkling white shot into the sky, giving a silvery sheen to Hell’s lavender curls. continue reading

EXCERPT - Heaven Sent: Pretty Red Ribbon

Pretty Red Ribbon coverThis is a little bit of a quickie that I did for Loose Id’s Twelve Days of Kissmas. It’s a little shot of Tyler and Johnnie from Heaven on their first Christmas together.Find the full Stocking Stuffer here http://www.loose-id.com/detail.aspx?ID=392

Tyler stared at the silent television. Christmas music drifted through the air from the closed bedroom door. Had Johnnie gone to bed? It was only nine o’clock, absurdly early for him even if the two of them had been up most of the previous night. They’d spent Christmas Eve and this morning at Amy’s house, enjoying Tyler’s young nieces’ Christmas cheer. But tonight was supposed to be for him and Johnnie. Their first Christmas as a married couple.

Tyler sighed, closing his eyes in defeat. His fault. He shouldn’t have left. Or he should have allowed them to go away for the night as Johnnie suggested. He turned toward the closed bedroom door and headed for it, ready to face the music. Christmas music, that is. Of course, the faint strains of holiday cheer coming from the bedroom didn’t mean Johnnie was awake. He often liked to listen to music as he went to sleep.

Tyler saw the scrap of thick, red, faux velvet ribbon sticking out from under the door, lit by a soft light that peeped through the crack. Stalling, he bent to pick it up but it proved to be longer than he thought. He pulled until it resisted, attached to something. continue reading

A Ghost Story

© 2005 Jet Mykles

A witch has an unusual manner of exorcism.

It may be of note that I’ve wondered if this witch lives in the Leashed world.

*************************************************
Humming softly, I walked straight through the unlocked doorway. It was rather easy, since the door itself had fallen from deteriorated hinges and lay rotting on the threshold. The moment I got through the opening, the howling started. Strange, unearthly moans that rattled the shattered windowpanes. A chill wind agitated dust motes in the moonlit air.

“Hello to you too,” I murmured, continuing, undeterred through the hallway toward the main room at the back of the house. I studiously ignored the waving cobwebs that dangled above and I refused to hear the scrabbling of what had to be rats—or worse—from the shadowed corners. continue reading

EXCERPT - Leashed: Two For One Deal

Howl AnthologyThis one is a story in the Howl anthology from Loose Id. It was the Halloween anthology for 2005.

It’s the first story in the Leashed universe, an alternative modern day where witches and shapeshifters are real but they aren’t known to the public at large.

This series wasn’t so much inspired by my images, but there are some images I did of the boys to help me visualize them. Seen here.

Find Howl in ebook here: http://www.loose-id.com/detail.aspx?ID=70
at Amazon in print

The excerpt at the buy link above is a good one to get an idea of the story, so I’ve included a steamier excerpt here.

We were all silent with our thoughts. Michael sat up, gaze pointed toward my bookshelf but I doubted my paperback collection was his focus. Rudy sank back in my chair, brimming with expectation. I stayed very still and watched Michael. He was quite obviously the leader of the two and he knew way more about the situation than I could have hoped. I felt pretty confident that, with him on my side, I could stave off Roland.

Of course, with him at my side, I’d love to do a bunch of other things. Afternoon sunlight streamed through the sheers on the window behind the couch, touching off mahogany highlights in his hair. It my have been fancy, but I’m pretty sure that I could see the ghost of the rosettes that would decorate his hide when he changed to a jaguar. continue reading
